Why split a PDF locally instead of uploading it?

A scanned book, a bundle of monthly statements, a 200-page report you only need three pages from — sooner or later a PDF grows too large or too mixed-purpose for what you actually need. Most free "split PDF" websites handle this the same way the free "merge PDF" sites do: by quietly uploading your file to a server before doing anything with it. That's a strange amount of trust to hand over for a document that might contain a signature, a bank statement, or a page you'd rather not have sitting on someone else's disk.

This tool never uploads anything. It runs entirely in your browser using pdf-lib, a JavaScript library that reads the raw structure of your PDF and copies only the pages you asked for into brand-new documents, assembled in memory on your own device. Page thumbnails are rendered locally too, with pdf.js — the same engine built into Firefox — so you can see exactly what's on each page before deciding how to split it.

Select a PDF file or drag it into the drop zone; every page appears as its own thumbnail so you can see the document at a glance. Rotate a page 90° at a time or delete one entirely if it shouldn't be in any of the output files — a blank scanned sheet, for instance. Then choose how to split: Custom ranges lets you type groups like "1-3, 4, 5-7" where each comma-separated group becomes its own file, while Every N pages automatically chops the document into equal-sized chunks — useful for breaking a long scan into, say, 10-page pieces without typing out every range by hand. Press Split PDF and each result appears with its own download button.

There's no page limit built into the tool, though very large scanned PDFs full of images will naturally take a little longer to render thumbnails for since everything runs on your own device rather than a server farm. If you type a range that doesn't make sense — a page number beyond the document's length, or text that isn't a valid range — the tool tells you exactly which part was invalid instead of producing a broken file. If you later need to put pages from several PDFs back together, the Merge PDF tool works the same privacy-first way and shares the same rotate-and-delete page controls.

Frequently asked questions

How do I choose which pages go into which output file?

Enter a custom range like "1-3,5,8-9", or split automatically every N pages.

Can I download all the split files at once?

Yes — "Download All" packages every resulting PDF into a single .zip file.

Can I rotate or delete pages before splitting?

Yes — each page thumbnail has its own rotate and delete controls before you split.
