Remove Background
Cut out the background from a photo automatically, replace it with a color or image, right in your browser.
or drag and drop images here (JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC)
The first click downloads a small AI model (a few MB) to your browser — after that it works fully offline. Your photos themselves are never uploaded anywhere.

How does local, in-browser background removal work?
Removing the background from a photo used to mean either a subscription tool that uploads your image to a server, or manually tracing around the subject in an image editor. This tool does neither: it runs a small AI segmentation model directly in your browser tab to figure out which pixels belong to the subject and which belong to the background, then makes the background transparent — all without your photo ever being sent anywhere. It's the same kind of edit often used for product photos, profile pictures, and stickers — the sort of thing that used to take minutes in an image editor now takes seconds.
The first time you use it, your browser downloads the AI model itself — a few megabytes of data — the same way it would download any image or script from a website. That download only happens once and is cached for next time. Your photos are a completely separate thing: each one is loaded straight into the browser's memory and processed there, and at no point does it get uploaded to a server, not even temporarily.
Select one or more photos and press Remove Background — each is processed one at a time, with a progress indicator, in a Web Worker so the rest of the page stays responsive. Once a result is ready, drag the slider across its thumbnail to compare the original against the cutout side by side. By default the background becomes transparent (shown as a checkered pattern), but you can swap it for a solid color or your own background image using the controls above the list — every finished photo updates instantly since re-compositing a background is cheap, unlike re-running the AI model. The edge softness slider blurs just the cutout's alpha edge slightly, which can make wispy hair or fur look less cut-out and more natural; it's off by default since most subjects look best with the crisp edge the model already produces.
Results are usually best on photos with a clear, distinct subject — people, animals, products, vehicles — against a background that isn't the same color as the subject. Very fine details like loose hair strands or fur may not come out perfectly even with edge softness turned up, and busy or cluttered backgrounds can sometimes confuse the model. If the result isn't quite right, cropping the photo tighter around the subject before uploading it often helps. Photographing the subject against an evenly lit, plain background in the first place also makes a noticeably cleaner cutout easier for any tool — human or AI — to produce.
Frequently asked questions
How does background removal work without uploading my photo?
An AI model runs entirely inside your browser (WebAssembly), so your photo is processed and never sent to a server.
Can I replace the background instead of leaving it transparent?
Yes — after removing the background you can keep it transparent or swap in a solid color or another image.
Can I fine-tune the cutout edges?
Yes — an edge-softness slider feathers the cutout edge for a more natural blend.
Can I crop the result to a standard ID or passport photo size like 3×4 cm?
Yes — pick a size preset (3×4 cm, 4×6 cm, 2×3 cm, 3.5×4.5 cm / 35×45 mm, or 2×2 in) and the tool center-crops the cutout to that exact aspect ratio and scales it to the precise pixel size for printing at your chosen DPI, with a slider to nudge the crop up or down so the face lands where a photo booth would put it.
